Spending 3-5 years or so in a career/job, you tend to/approach a career crisis called mid-career itch. This condition is referred to as a stagnation stage wherein doing same set of work and facing similar problems you are left with little/no scope of brain storming as your work, problems and their solutions are all predictable. Your effort level start descending and your productivity declining, though hard you push and burn yourself, but results are not in the desired direction.
Commonly referred to as 7-year itch this crisis is mostly faced in mid 30s of your career when you enter into the strategic role from operational part. Though in certain cases the age/time period of it’s appearance could be much sooner as well.
The after-effects of this problem include:
- irritability in nature & behavior,
- lack of concentration
- incapability to take decisions
- if persisted even effect your health and personal life.
To avoid undergoing such stage, you need to be pro-active with regard to your career and a movement in it., not necessarily job-switch but even profile or department change keeps your work interesting and challenging.
The root cause includes:
- monotonous job nature,
- lack of competitiveness,
- lack of movement/new project/job assignments,
- dissatisfaction from job profile,
Though getting acceptance as an integral part of the career cycle, irrespective of the industry, there are quite a many examples who have successfully ruled out this problem and are very successful in their career and have been there more than 10-15 years and such. And they are still continuing their work content both with their job and themselves.
Before problem, really becomes a crisis, root it out, act pro-actively and instead don’t allow root-in. Plan yourself short term plans and abide by it’s implementation and review and keep yourself and your career in flow.
