Using your phone as an advanced job search tool

The cell phone is an important tool whose value is greatly undermined and underestimated in today’s era. It continues to be exploited for all the wrong reasons and never quite used in the right areas. While your PC may still dominate the area of instruments of job search, the phone plays a significant role too and could pave your way to a successful and triumphant career. This article tries to shed light on the many avenues of job search that can be conquered via the phone and the many pitfalls that you may face in the initial stages of job search.

  • One of the many disadvantages of the phone is that you never know whether you are intruding into the private domain of your caller. Therefore, it is always important that you ask the caller whether it is an appropriate time to talk. Ranting about your main motive like a frantic telemarketer is not going to go down well.
  • Make sure that you are seated in a calm and quiet place while making the call. It is never a good idea to have a phone networking session with distractions. Having the sounds of children shouting and the TV through the phone is not going to send a good message.
  • Always be polite and nice to the secretary/receptionist in case you do not get through to the hiring manager directly. State the purpose of your call and try to get an appointment via phone for a prospective day. Also make sure that you sound extremely important, unlike a telemarketer.
  • It is never a good idea to jump straight into the job topic during the call. The basic idea is networking and trying to find something important about the company and the job sector in general. ‘Call HR’ would be the usual reply. So always try looking for different avenues.
