Working on an oil rig

Oil and natural gas play a pivotal role in keeping the world on the move. As a result the world is getting more and more dependent on oil. Hence oil drilling has become more important nowadays than ever. There is enough scope of getting employed on an oil rig if the employee can show appropriate qualifications and credentials. However, a person aiming for a job on an oil rig has to consider certain things before proceeding with the idea.

First, daily work on oil rigs demands hard labor from workers. Almost all oil rigs operate at 12 hour shifts and workers get little rest amidst the shifts. Hence they should be ready to take up the challenge of hard work throughout their tenure.

Second, both onshore and offshore oil rigs experience extreme weather conditions from time to time. Rigs in desert regions are subjected to soaring temperature during summer, rigs situated in the northern part of North America and Europe go through chilling conditions throughout the year and the rigs at sea experience strong winds, torrential rain and even hurricanes at times. Employees should have the ability to accommodate themselves with such harsh weather conditions.

Third, there are different types of works that are performed on an oil rig. Though most of them are directly related to drilling of oil, specialized workers are required for each task. For example, roughnecks are involved in moving drilling supplies and work to keep the rig clean; roustabouts are responsible for the drilling process and for the handling of drilling equipments. Hence, a person has to first determine which designation he should opt for before building a career in the oil drilling industry.

Before going to work on an oil rig a person has to obtain the relevant papers like the certificates and work visa if required. He should also undergo proper training before he can be deployed on a rig.
