According to his theory, the areas could be categorized into six broad areas. These areas are briefly described below.

Realistic areas

Is your interest is realistic in nature? By realistic, Holland refers to those job opportunities that require a physical approach and require hands on training. Defense, law enforcement, athletics, crafts, construction sector, mechanical engineering are some of the areas that can be put under realistic areas. It could even mean working with plants and animals that are very much a part of the real life that surrounds us. If you are physically capable, this is the area that could prove to be helpful to you.

Artistic areas

The literal meaning of the aforementioned word does the trick itself. The area is for those who have an artistic capability that could be drawing, painting, writing, composing music etc. If you think that you are creative in nature, then you could go for these areas that use your artistic ability to create wonders. Musicians, writers, photographers, interior designers, architects and painters belong to this group.

Enterprising areas

These are for people who have influencing, monitoring and persuading powers when it comes to deciding on a career. Holland has devised this area especially for those who have good communication skills, public speaking skills, entrepreneurial skills and negotiation skill. The area is all about getting things done within a short span of time. Politicians, public orators, senators, entrepreneurs, negotiators and mediators form a part of this exclusive group.

Investigative areas

This area has been dedicated to a lot of thinking professionals and those who are exceedingly good with math and logic. Those who are good at statistics and data charts and find happiness in working with them could find their area to be investigative in nature and their personality to be very much analytical. Software programmers, statisticians, mathematicians, scientists and analysts in different sectors fall into this abstract group.

Conventional areas

This is an area that caters to people who are practical in approach and thus do things practically. Procedures and routines are followed to the strictest norm by these professionals. If you think that you could work with data and ideas by applying a practical but detailed approach, then you would be fit for job opportunities that require professionals with dedicated practical abilities.

Social areas

Have you ever felt the urge to help others in times of distress, counsel them in the right way and heal them, then you should choose a profession that falls under social inhibitions. Professionals from NGOs, doctors, counselors, teachers and motivators fall under this group. These groups of people are normally seen to be sensitive in nature and understand feelings of others.
